Cracked main spar
Hi guys,
Last saturday I flew a glider I had a crash with just before this years Bowylie, following repairs. I was very pleased with its performance until a wing separated in flight bringing my expensive glider to terrafirma. When examining the sailplane I noticed the separation of the wing was obviously due to a cracked mainspar which I missed in the original crash, that separated in this flight. I spent Sunday rebuilding the wing and repaired the mainspar by gluing the broken fragments with 30 minute epoxy. I then put Marine x1 ply on each side of the repaired spar also glued with 30 minute epoxy. I then tied the splinted spar with surgical wire and coated the repair with 5 minute epoxy. To me it feels like it should be strong enough however has anybody got any better ideas how to repair a cracked mainspar?

Hi Steve. put a photo up of the repair and we all can make suggestions, one thing i will say is most likely you could have used CA. and dental floss. I know a lot of you out there think only epoxy but CA. used correctly is just as good as epoxy.

A shear web between top and bottom spars with 0.4mm ply is always VERY strong.
