Lets See Your Scale Models

Postby Marty Cowan » 24 Feb 2010, 17:49

Thought I might start a thread for WRCS members to show off some of their scale models...

I'll get the ball rolling with some of my birds, heres a blast from the past my first completely scratch built model. Used MAP 3 views to build this sweet flyer... 1/4 scale and had a Tartan 22cc for power. Anyone remember the "Vintage Air Pagent" held at Paradise Gardens back in the early 80's.

The very first jet model to fly at WRCS (Belrose) way back in 1980 was my Byron F-16, ducted fan withan O.S. 61V for power...

P.S. note the background in these pics and the serious lack of trees in 1980 compared to nowadays.

Some P-51's .... The first one is an Aerotech 1/5 scale Stang which I am still yet to fly as it still needs some minor tweaks but hope to have her ready to go soon. Iam still looking for the ideal engine for this bird, Iwas going to use a piped Moki 2.1 but I really want a big 4 stroke for her, problem is no one yet makes a big enougth 4 stroke to power this bird. My dream engine would be a V- twin cylinder Saito 440, just need to convince Saito to slap two of their 220 singles together and presto!!

The last two Stangs are actually the same model which I was flying back in the mid 90's after being "kit bashed" and rebuilt a total three times. Originally started life as a 66" span ModelTech ARF, I did some mods to improve scale outline also and added lots of detail to add some bling. Power was a Y.S. 91 4 stroke and it was a dream to fly...

The Vintage Air Pageant...first Permit to Fly ever...Bob Carpenter had to declare an RCAS rainy day and use funds to fly to CASA in Melbourne to talk some sense into them.

I built my own failsafe device, used a ground based Rx to play machine gun sounds into the Paradise Gardens public address system from a micro switch on my Tx which I could operate with my tummy.....Kawasaki leaf blower 55cc from CB Associates with a 22x10 Dynathrust prop, scratch built from a Dave Boddington 1/8 scale drawing from RCM&E into a 1/4 scale beauty which has over 1000 flights on it and performed at an RAAF air show at Schofield's before they shut down.

Ernst Udet flew this Fokker DVII to be the second highest ace behind von Richthofen. Lo! was Udet's girlfriend Lola Zink.

F4u Corsair, Zenoah G62, 23x8, Top Flight Kit

CmPro ARP AT6 with a 120 2c

The old Stampe SV4 with a Saito 120 4c (ROTI IMANS) a tree took the middle out of the ROTHMANS "H". I met the manager of the Rothmans display team at Shepparton one year and he said that "G-AYGR" had an old Woolsely motor in it which leaked a lot of oil so that my plane was known as " Oily gay-gar"

Best plane ever....GeeBee Senior Sportster Model Y, flown to fame by Florence Klinger-Smith of the Powder Puff Pilots. Won the most prize money of all of the GeeBees.

97", G62

This is called "liking your GeeBee...the GeeBee Hug" after he earned a new Permit.

I have a 10 foot Bleriot on the building board as a result of the Pageant....one day.....Browny has had a plan of mine for 4 years and hasn produced one rib yet...I think they are about 22" long and there is a bundle of them....wing warping ) probably got wet being the first to fly the English Channel) ! I beleive I still have an original pageant program in Dan's sepia colours.

Speaking of Pagent programmes, I reckon I might still have one also floating around somewhere also pics of your "then" new DVII, Piggo's Dormoy Bathtub and a host of other pics from the Pagent, just gotta get my scanner working so I can transfer the old fashioned prints to digital images for uploading here....
Dont mention Dan Reese either the bugger still owes me a new Webra Speed 91 as it was a prize from the event that I never did receive?? but thats all water under the bridge I spose

Heres some more scale pics anyway of birds from my hanger- Fiber Classics F-86 Sabre 1/5 scale with 27lb thrust JG-100 turbine power. Fiber Classics Mig-15bis also 1/5 scale powered by an 18 lb thrust Wren MW-54 Super Sport turbine.

Last ones for now, my Vailly Hurricane ST4500 power in Battle of Britain colours waiting for jerry and word to scramble ;) . She's yet to fly as the ol Super Tiger really aint up to the task I reckon and I dont want to spoil the nose outline with an exposed gasser and spark plug.
