Re: Lets See Your Scale Models
Here are some pictures of my latest P40 taken before certification flights and a couple taken by Doug as I was coming in to land at Bowylie.
The model is based on Ross Pays full size P40E restoration operating from Scone NSW

The pics do it no justice. In real life Marty...this is an absolute beauty.
I was there when (a very nervous..which surprised me) Stan the Man did the maiden. She flew like there was no tomorrow. Then Stan did his trademark victory roll over the field and came in to land like a butterfly with sore feet.
It was a perfect touchdown and there was much shaking hands & backslapping. Real good feeling to see her come home safely.
She not only turned heads but performed flawlessly at Bowylie too.

Re: Lets See Your Scale Models
Top flight Giant P47D kit 85 inches span, with 2 bombs, F/glass cowl, ready to test fly @15KG.I test fly in undercoat before applying the finish. The finish is the easy bit.
3W85 with a 26X10 prop, 10 X 645 analogue Hitec servos into a smart -fly, 32oze. gas tank, i learned the hard way that it will run out of gas on a 24oze.
Two life 2200 batteries,@ 6.6 volt each, two H/Duty separate on/off switches into the smart fly.
I learned the hard way that if you run one 7,2 volt lipo. 5000mah with a regulator down to 6 volts and the regulator dies it will kill your aircraft, so no regulators for me from now on.
All the retract workings are fitted in the underbelly tank, air-valve,servo and air filler point so no air connections between the body and wing.
With the 85cc in the nose and the batteries up front it balances spot on so i did not have to add any nose weight.
The taxi testing went well and the engine with the baffling in the cowl ran at 85 degrees centigrade.
So a few more bits and bobs and off it go's.

I have added some shots (next page) nearly finished and 7 flights under its belt.
I cannot say i am confident with the landings yet, i still need to slow it down more and trust in the aircraft's ability to land at a slower speed.
It weighs in at 35 Pounds but with a 3W85 in the nose and the necessary strengthening around the engine compartment and my inability to build light not to bad.
It has a wing span of 85 inches and is a very fat good lifting profile, the wing loading is 60oze per sq. foot it sounds a lot but has little resemblance to the average R/C. model of 10 - 15 Pounds where a high wing loading would make a large difference.
The engine weighs 7 Pounds i could have put a lighter engine in but i would just have had to add nose weight so there would not be much to gain
I have just been told by the sites computer that i cannot add any more pics. so i will put them in the next reply at the bottom of the page

Re: Lets See Your Scale Models
Refurbished/read repaired 2C Mick Reeves Hurricane. With Dear old John Piggott in the cockpit.
Well here it is again with a new wing and cowl you can see shots of the old original Hurricane in this segment further back, i had so much trouble with the OS160 that kept dying and bringing the Hurricane down.
I had at least 6 bush landings of one kind or another, once it pancaked into the dam and was found floating up right with no damage so it must have been the first Hurricane to land in the dam.
I must have had 15 dead sticks with this most i saved.
The last flight before the refurbishment i only just managed to get it over the dam but hard onto the end of the field and the retract punched clean through the wing so it was time for a new wing.
I found out at last what the trouble was with the engine i had a blown head gasket that only showed up once it was in the air and at flying temperatures where it would open up and suck in air and kill the engine.
You can see my posts under workshop on the blown head gasket.
It now weighs 10.6 Kilo a bit less then the original and i have now had 10 flights so far with this before it was painted without any problems at all. It all has worked flawlessly apart from me damaging the lower shroud on the retract so i have left them of and will attach them for scale day if it survives until then.

Re: Lets See Your Scale Models
My mistake that shot of what i thought was Stan's Hurricane above was the real thing.
I guess that's got to be a compliment.
Four flights with the P47 D on Sunday and got the "rego" through no problem i had 2 good landings out of the 4 so not to bad and now i have started painting.
Boy does that 47 honk.
So with a bit of luck and if i don't try to fly them before scale day i will have the Hurricane and the P47 for scale day.
But then again i might just be tempted to give them another go before.

Re: Lets See Your Scale Models
Pica 1/5 Spitfire 87 inches wingspan this will be a Mk 9 it will have a DLE55 at the moment with engine retracts and spinner it weighs 26 Pound not to bad it will fly most likely around 30 Pounds in undercoat so around low 30+Pounds finished weight, but that depends on the balance i might have to add nose weight.
This was briefly started by the late Tony Velor, but as i found out the kit was designed 30 plus years ago for fixed under carriage and the main spar is right in the way for fitting the retracts so a hell of a lot of fiddling to get them in. I now no why he stopped at the retract fitting.
