Before gluing balsa fuselage sides to ply formers with epoxy,  I pepper the surfaces to be joined with indentations made with an ice pick or sharpened 75mm nail. The glue soaks into the indentations and the resulting epoxy “nails” provide joints many times stronger than ordinary butt joints. The same trick works for epoxying balsa to balsa or ply to ply.
