Here are some ideas and suggestions, from David Menzies, for the glider fun fly event planned for 28th November. You can send an email message to David by clicking this link This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The idea of this event is to attract entries from beyond the traditional glider ranks, so please let David have your views, and also let him have an indication of whether you are keen to participate. We need the numbers to make it work! click [read more] on the right
Basic Formula (rules). 1) Controls to be rudder, elevator and motor. Ailerons, flaps, airbrakes (any wing controls) will be penalised, they are not required for a satisfactory performance 2) An EASY STAR type aircraft - foam with pusher prop for safety. Typical cost about $90 with a speed 400, although a brushless motor/lipo conversion will probably give better performance for some events and is cheap to do. We might be able to find a bulk deal if there is enough demand - researching at the moment! 3) Only one (1) airframe per entrant for the event (can use glue, tape etc to repair to flying condition). 4) Maximum power – 3s2200ma lipo, 2000kV motor.
Events. 1) Climb and glide - 5 minute max + spot landing. No penalty for a maximum of 15 seconds of initial motor run for standard speed 400 brushed motors only, brushless motor run will be deducted from final score. 2) Touch and go's - number in one (1) pass of the strip + spot landing. 3) Limbo - passes under in one (1) minute + spot landing. 4) Loops - number in 30 seconds + spot landing. 5) Team relay race Two (2) teams formed based on previous results, Team A from place-getters 1,3,5 etc Team B from place-getters 2,4,6 etc 1st entrant from each team flies one (1) lap of the course, on passing behind the finish line entrant 2 launches and so on until all have flown. The winner is the 1st team to complete the course. 6) Mass launch to complete the event.
Events 1 to 5 will be point scoring, event 6 is just for fun.
Further Information. 1) This is a fun event, hopefully to capture some of the essence of the BOAT days of old. 2) The emphasise on rudder, elevator and motor control is deliberate, it makes things delightfully imprecise and perfect for a fun event. 3) The emphasis on foam/pusher is also deliberate - fun, safety, no specialist stuff. Might consider allowing other entries from rudder/elevator/throttle gliders but the events are designed to favour the proposed class 4) It is hoped this comp will encourage more entrants in future glider days. 5) Advice on aircraft options. construction tips, aircraft modifications, batteries and motors will follow if the response looks large enough to warrant running the event.
